Bruny Island
Weekend Photography Retreat

Located off the south-east coast of Tasmania, Bruny Island is surrounded by the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, Tasman Sea and, the Southern Ocean. ‘Bruny’ is made up of two land masses, North Bruny and South Bruny connected by a narrow isthmus known as ‘the neck’ and extends around 100kms from north to south.

With almost 300kms of coastline, towering sea cliffs, pristine white sandy beaches, one of Australia’s oldest lighthouses, Bruny Island is a stunning and varied natural environment with a bounty of photographic opportunity. The diversity of plants and native flowers includes orchids and the Tasmanian Waratah; the local wildlife inhabitants include rare and endangered white wallabies, all twelve of Tasmania’s endemic bird species (including Forty-spotted Pardalotes), echidnas, pademelons, quolls, penguins and white-bellied sea eagles just to name a few.

During this retreat you will focus on what interests you most and be on location with a professional photographer, so you can take advantage of instruction and guidance to achieve awe-inspiring photos.

Locations will be selected as you learn more about the area and hear about our favourites. You’ll discuss different photographic perspectives and be where you most want to be when the light is just right. Enjoy a choice of outings throughout the day, in the early morning and evening, during the blue-hour and at twilight, dusk, dawn, sunset and sunrise. After dark, capture the magic of a starry night sky and, if atmospheric conditions are right, you may be fortunate to observe Mother Nature’s spectacular light show – an Aurora Australis (Southern Lights). And for birders and wildlife photography enthusiasts, we’ll be sure to spend time out in the field seeking the best possible opportunities for you to photograph the native critters that make Bruny Island their home.

Your accommodation during this retreat will be in a photographer friendly lodge or cabin situated in an idyllic location where you are sure to relax and unwind after a full day of photography.

You will have a dedicated photography tutor and a tour host accompanying you so you don’t need do anything except relax, enjoy and immerse yourself in photography and your surroundings – the perfect stress-free weekend away.

Travelling with a non-photographer? There is plenty of opportunity to simply relax and enjoy other activities. Your tour host is available to be their guide while you enjoy all the photo shoots with your tutor.
