You may choose to refine your waterfall photography skills or capture the serene yet dynamic beauty of water swirling around river rocks. Maybe you’ll create a peaceful image of a fern-lined stream flowing through the forest. Or perhaps your focus will be on the intricate details of fungi, mosses and lichens, delicate unfurling fern fronds, or the patterns and textures of the bark on the trees. Maybe you’ll frame the splendour of the forest and the way the light filters through the trees.

Linger and watch for birds and wildlife in their natural habitat for long enough and you could create a delightful bird or animal portrait, capture their behaviour, or take an impressive shot of a bird in flight.

It often feels as if the elusive Pink Robins are playfully announcing their presence, frequently appearing during our guided walks.

Each season brings its own magic to Mt Field

Every season unveils its unique magic in Mt Field, transforming the landscape into a living gallery of natural wonders. In autumn, the crinkly leaves of the endemic Fagus form a natural art gallery as they transition from lush greens to earthy golds, bronzes and reds. Meanwhile, a fungi wonderland emerges in autumn and continues through winter; a time when snowcapped mountains add a touch of magic to the mountainous landscape. Spring brings delicate orchids and scoparia flowers, while in summer, the landscape is painted with vibrant red Tasmanian Waratahs. What really sets Mount Field National Park apart is its incredible biodiversity, making every visit a truly unique experience.

The birds and wildlife in Mt Field National Park

Mount Field National Park is full of different birds and wildlife that either live there or come and go. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for pademelons, echidnas and platypus and even wombats taking a leisurely stroll. While no encounter is unforgettable, the chance to spot an Eastern Barred Bandicoot or Eastern Quoll on an overnight trip would be truly special. Oh, and in the dark of night, the glow worms shine bright.

As we gazed across the lake, a gentle ripple caught our attention. In an instant, Coreena lifted her binoculars to her eye and confirmed the presence of a platypus gliding gracefully across the water.

Our feathered friends delight in quietly flitting around, singing, whistling and occasionally screeching. These include fantails, wrens, pardalotes, thornbills, robins, honeyeaters, whistlers, wattlebirds, rosellas, cockatoos, currawongs and cuckoos, and many others. We might also be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of a majestic Wedge-tailed Eagle gracefully soaring overhead.

Birds and wildlife are undoubtedly challenging to spot at times, but they’re much easier to see when they’re out and about. Sometimes, wallabies graze quietly, and birds chirp away without coming out into the open. However, taking our time and moving slowly increases our chances of spotting them as they move around their habitat.

It’s important to remember though, we can never guarantee the species we’ll encounter or how many during any single visit. Each trip offers a unique opportunity to explore the park’s natural beauty and witness its incredible wildlife.

We were almost at the end of our walk when right in front of us a wombat emerged from the scrub, had a scratch and paused for a bit before continuing on its merry way.
