Mt Field Retreat is situated at the edge of Mt Field National Park. Its proximity to the park means our time exploring and photographing the area’s natural attractions will be maximised, with a diversity of habitats to explore and plenty of time to do it.
Mt Field Retreat opened its doors for the first time in June 2023 and comprises four beautifully furnished individual self-contained 1-bedroom pod units, with more to be built in future. We (Roy and I, Coreena) took an opportunity for a weekend away (midway through home renovations) to stay at Mt Field Retreat at the end of June for a couple of nights to familiarise ourselves with the space and comforts ahead of launching our Mt Field Private Nature Retreats. And we’re pleased to report, Mt Field Retreat is absolutely photographer-friendly lodging for an enriching overnight photography and travel experience in Mt Field National Park.
When you step inside your pod unit, you are drawn into a quiet sanctuary – a space to indulge, relax and rejuvenate after (or even during) a day of exploring. The full-size window draws your gaze from the inside to the garden of ferns and birds flitting about. Always a chance you’ll see Tasmanian Pademelons grazing too. Whether you choose to relax indoors or outside on your private deck, there are soft warm throws to keep you warm.
Now let me mention the shower. Well… after a big day of photo shoots and walkabouts, the large rain showers in the pods at Mt Field Retreat pamper you with a waterfall of instant hot water over your shoulders! And the luxurious Tasmanian-made Milie Organics guest amenities are pure indulgence for your skin. Believe me when I tell you that your hands could not possibly become softer and smoother than after using their Citrus Olive Oil Hand & Body Wash.
And yes, of course, there are all the practical things thought about too… a comfy bed perfect for a restful night’s sleep so you’re ready for another day in the great outdoors, a TV and a sofa, a kitchenette equipped with all that you’ll need for self-catering –cookware, utensils, crockery, cutlery, hotplates, microwave, small fridge, AND a dishwasher. You’ll also have the convenience of free Wi-Fi in your unit too. Photographers will be overjoyed to hear that there’s a desk with suitable chairs where you can upload and process photos, and plenty of power points to charge ALL your camera batteries and devices at once!!
So, when it comes to my musings about Mt Field Retreat, this is it, in a pod!
(Pun intended)
Our time exploring and photographing Mt Field National Park is maximised by staying overnight at Mt Field Retreat
There’s something for everyone at Mt Field National Park! Staying at Mt Field Retreat each night of your Shutterbug Walkabouts Tasmanian Photography Experience means you don’t have far to go to or between photo shoots, whether we explore on foot or take a short drive to a nearby vantage location to stimulate your photographic creativity.
How much time we spend in each location photographing is not as much of a concern as it is if you visit only for a day. By staying overnight right by the entrance to the national park, you may like to take short photo walks, or longer walks if you choose. We can go birding, and wildlife spotting or stay put for a while in one place, capturing the beauty of the landscape for as long as you desire. We can venture into the many diverse natural habitats like waterfalls, moorlands, mountains, rainforests, and rivers… imagine the photos you could take!
Now let’s not forget the seasonal charm of Mt Field either… for instance, the turning of the Fagus in autumn, thriving fungi in autumn and winter, snow-capped mountains in winter (or any time really). In springtime, adorable wildlife babies and birdlife chicks amass, and capturing your attention when it blooms in summer is the flower of the Tasmanian Waratah.
While each season and even day may feature something different, there’s one thing that is guaranteed… you’ll go to sleep and wake up surrounded by the natural beauty of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area in which Mt Field National Park is included.
Shutterbug Walkabouts specialises in travel experiences for photo enthusiasts, leisure/holiday shutterbugs and outdoorsy non-photographers who love to explore the splendour of our natural world and the wildlife and birds that inhabit it. We offer a variety of ways for you to pursue your passion for nature and nature photography in Tasmania’s great outdoors… come with us to Discover, Experience and Photograph!
