Freycinet is situated on Tasmania’s stunning east coast and offers landscape photographers countless opportunities to capture truly impressive photographs.
The landscape of Freycinet National Park, renowned for the iconic Wineglass Bay, is dominated by a range known as the ‘Hazards’ with its pink-hued granite peaks rising from the sea. The area is well known for its rugged landscapes, vibrant colours and dramatic light.
Immerse yourself in breathtaking views, tranquil pebble-filled bays and pristine sandy beaches. During this retreat you will visit magnificent Wineglass Bay, Cape Tourville Lighthouse, Friendly Beaches and many other equally stunning locations. An abundance of natural features, bountiful birds and a thriving wildlife await you, the photographer!
You will focus on what interests you most and be on location with a professional photographer, so you can take advantage of instruction and guidance to achieve awe-inspiring photos.
Locations will be selected as you learn more about the area and hear about our favourites. You’ll discuss different photographic perspectives and enjoy a recce or two. Be where you most want to be when the light is just right. Enjoy a choice of outings throughout the day, especially early morning and evening – during the blue-hour and at twilight, dusk, dawn, sunset and sunrise. After dark, capture the magic of a starry night sky and, if atmospheric conditions are right, you may be fortunate to observe Mother Nature’s spectacular light show – an Aurora Australis (Southern Lights).
Your accommodation during this retreat is in a photographer friendly lodge situated in an idyllic location where you are sure to relax and unwind after a full day of photography.
You will have a dedicated photography tutor and a tour host accompanying you so you won’t need to do anything except relax, enjoy and immerse yourself in photography and your surroundings – the perfect stress-free weekend away.
Travelling with a non-photographer? There is plenty of opportunity to simply relax and enjoy other activities. Your tour host is available to be their guide while you enjoy all the photo shoots with your tutor.
Your itinerary may vary so you get to focus on photographing the scenes and subjects that most interest you, while ensuring the best possible experience in the time you have.
Your Freycinet Weekend Photography Retreat begins when we meet you at your hotel in Hobart and travel the east coast of Tasmania to Freycinet National Park. There’ll be several photo stops along the way and an opportunity to call into a winery (or two) if you wish. Arriving at our our accommodation for the next two nights we check in and decide upon the afternoon’s activities. Enjoy a picnic lunch and spend the afternoon out photographing followed by a twilight/sunset shoot. Remaining on location, pre-dinner refreshments will be followed by a delicious 2-course BBQ with beverages (weather permitting). After dark, a night sky photo shoot and, if Mother Nature puts on her spectacular night light show in the dark sky, a chance at Aurora photography too.
An early start to the day with a sunrise shoot followed by a day focusing on your photographic interests and objectives. There’s a diversity of natural attractions within the national park and along the Freycinet Peninsula to explore; from the iconic Wineglass Bay, The Hazards mountain range, Cape Tourville Lighthouse, Friendly Beaches and much, much more – an inspirational feast for your eyes and photographic senses. A boat trip to Hazards Beach with a leisurely coastal forest trail provides the easiest access to Wineglass Bay beach or spend the main part of the day on an 11km hike on the Wineglass Bay and Hazards Beach Circuit trail. Lunch today will be catered for according to your chosen activities.
Another twilight and sunset shoot followed by a delicious 3-course dinner featuring Tasmanian food and wine.
After dinner, shoot for the stars with another night sky photo shoot, and if the opportunity presents, Aurora photography.
Our final morning in the Freycinet National Park to capture the first light as the sun rises over the coastal landscape and the rugged mountains known as ‘The Hazards’. Return to our accommodation for breakfast before checking out. After breakfast, a choice of options to further explore and photograph Freycinet. Options include taking a cruise to Wineglass Bay to increase your chance of seeing whales or dolphins, take a scenic flight for aerial landscape photography, or opt for more time for the return journey to Hobart to include diversions visiting the Bicheno Blowhole and other coastal locations along the way known for colonies of shorebirds. Your 3-day weekend photography retreat concludes when we arrive at your Hobart accommodation or at the airport if you are departing on an evening flight.
