Located off the south-east coast of Tasmania, Bruny Island is surrounded by the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, Tasman Sea and, the Southern Ocean. ‘Bruny’ is made up of two land masses, North Bruny and South Bruny connected by a narrow isthmus known as ‘the neck’ and extends around 100kms from north to south.
With almost 300kms of coastline, towering sea cliffs, pristine white sandy beaches, one of Australia’s oldest lighthouses, Bruny Island is a stunning and varied natural environment with a bounty of photographic opportunity. The diversity of plants and native flowers includes orchids and the Tasmanian Waratah; the local wildlife inhabitants include rare and endangered white wallabies, all twelve of Tasmania’s endemic bird species (including Forty-spotted Pardalotes), echidnas, pademelons, quolls, penguins and white-bellied sea eagles just to name a few.
During this retreat you will focus on what interests you most and be on location with a professional photographer, so you can take advantage of instruction and guidance to achieve awe-inspiring photos.
Locations will be selected as you learn more about the area and hear about our favourites. You’ll discuss different photographic perspectives and be where you most want to be when the light is just right. Enjoy a choice of outings throughout the day, in the early morning and evening, during the blue-hour and at twilight, dusk, dawn, sunset and sunrise. After dark, capture the magic of a starry night sky and, if atmospheric conditions are right, you may be fortunate to observe Mother Nature’s spectacular light show – an Aurora Australis (Southern Lights). And for birders and wildlife photography enthusiasts, we’ll be sure to spend time out in the field seeking the best possible opportunities for you to photograph the native critters that make Bruny Island their home.
Your accommodation during this retreat will be in a photographer friendly lodge or cabin situated in an idyllic location where you are sure to relax and unwind after a full day of photography.
You will have a dedicated photography tutor and a tour host accompanying you so you don’t need do anything except relax, enjoy and immerse yourself in photography and your surroundings – the perfect stress-free weekend away.
Travelling with a non-photographer? There is plenty of opportunity to simply relax and enjoy other activities. Your tour host is available to be their guide while you enjoy all the photo shoots with your tutor.
Your itinerary may vary so you get to focus on photographing the scenes and subjects that most interest you, while ensuring the best possible experience in the time you have.
We meet you at your hotel in Hobart and travel to Bruny Island, making several photo stops throughout the journey as opportunities arise. Upon arrival on the Island, we’ll tour North Bruny where the landscape of sheltered coves and rolling hills is different from the high sea cliffs and forested landscape of South Bruny. Enjoy a picnic lunch and spend the afternoon out and about photographing various locations. We’ll check into our accommodation for the next two nights. You’ll have a chance for a little rest and revive before heading out for a twilight and sunset shoot at Cape Bruny in South Bruny National Park. Remaining on location, pre-dinner refreshments will be followed by a delicious 2-course BBQ with beverages (weather permitting).
After dark, we’ll head out for a night sky photography shoot, and Aurora photography, if Mother Nature puts on her light show.
An early start to the day with a sunrise shoot followed by a day focusing on your interests and objectives. Exploring ‘Bruny’ enjoy a range of coastal or forest nature walks to capture awe-inspiring images of the coastal landscapes, forest plants, wildlife and birds. You’ll have the option of a 12km return hike along the Cape Queen Elizabeth Trail or, if you prefer something less active a chance to indulge in food and wine tasting experiences. Lunch today will be catered for according to your chosen activities.
Another twilight and sunset shoot followed by a delicious 3-course dinner featuring Tasmanian food and wine.
After dinner, travel to ‘The Neck’ to observe Short-tailed Shearwaters (aka Tasmanian muttonbirds) soar overhead and Little Penguins waddle ashore as they all return to their burrows for the night. With the appropriate equipment you’ll have the opportunity to photography Little Penguins in their natural habitat.
Capture the first light as the sun rises over the rugged landscape of Cape Bruny and one of Australia’s oldest Lighthouses. Return to your accommodation for breakfast before checking out. After breakfast, you have the option to further explore and photograph different locations on South Bruny or travel to North Bruny and visit the historic Quarantine Station. If you choose, an opportunity to see whales, dolphins, seals and seabirds while on an adventure cruise around the coastline or aerial photography on a scenic flight.
In the late afternoon, we drive back to Hobart where your 3-day weekend photography retreat concludes at your hotel accommodation or the airport for an evening departure. For a truly special end to your weekend retreat, what about a helicopter flight back to Hobart?

Easy/Moderate/Hard – You will be chauffeured to each photo shoot with locations reached by an easy or moderate walk from the car.
Some walks may be taken when dark or at pre-dawn (optional). Uneven paths, slippery rocks and uphill sections may need to be traversed.
A moderate level of fitness is required for most walks however activities may be adapted as required.
